As part of its “Eco 30: 30 Days of Living Green” celebration, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites visitors to a “Recycling Extravaganza” on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center at 3609 Spring Road in Oak Brook.

During this drive-through event, visitors remain in their cars while volunteers unload their recyclable and reusable items — from electronics, toner cartridges, scrap metal and cooking oil to eye glasses, clothes, school supplies and wheelchairs. There will an onsite paper-shredding service as well with a three-copier-box maximum per vehicle. Visitors cannot, however, drop off hazardous waste materials or items with Freon. A list of accepted items is posted at dupageforest.org/eco30, and more details are available through Fullersburg Woods at 630-850-8110.

“We’re thankful to our partners at S.C.A.R.C.E. who pulled together all of the groups that will be helping out at this event to keep as much as we can out of the landfills,” says Abby Dean, a naturalist at Fullersburg Woods and one of the program’s leaders.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County owns and manages 25,000 acres of prairies, woodlands and wetlands. Each year its 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs welcome over 4 million visitors.
