ELMHURST BUSINESSES GENERATE $17 MILLION-PLUS
IN SALES TAXES DURING SECOND QUARTER OF 2003

ELMHURST, Ill., December 1, 2003 – A total of 938 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate more than $17 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the Second Quarter of 2003 (April 1 through June 30), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry announced.

“The Second Quarter figures reflect positively on the vitality and diversity of Elmhurst’s retail businesses,” said Chamber President John R. Quigley, “especially when compared to the mall-dependant numbers in competing DuPage County communities.”

The city’s sales tax total includes $16.98 million from 888 businesses reporting in DuPage County and nearly $22,000 from 50 businesses reporting in Cook County.

Elmhurst ranked fourth among DuPage County municipalities in Second Quarter sales tax receipts behind only Naperville ($34.47 million/1,608 businesses), Downers Grove ($19.29M/983) and Lombard ($17.25M/919).  Aurora ($15.74M/754) rounded out the county’s top five, ahead of Oak Brook ($14.95M/445).

Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for 42 percent of Elmhurst’s Second Quarter sales tax receipts at $7.17 million and ranked second in DuPage County behind only Naperville ($12.57M) at more than $7.16 million.  Rounding out DuPage’s top five were Westmont ($7.63M), Downers Grove ($6.25M) and Lisle ($5.78M).

In DuPage County, Elmhurst’s Second Quarter sales tax receipts included $4.42 million in the agriculture/all others reporting category, and exceeded six figures both in furniture/
household/radio at $1.54 million and drinking/eating places at $1.05 million.

Other Elmhurst reporting categories in DuPage included drugs/miscellaneous retail ($908K), food ($644K), lumber/building/hardware ($401K) and manufacturers ($122K).

In Cook County, Elmhurst businesses reported in automotive/filling stations ($11.28K), agriculture/all others ($5.93K), manufacturers ($1.15K) and drugs/miscellaneous retail ($0.41K).

At a rate of 6.25 cents per $1.00, the state’s share of Elmhurst sales tax receipts reached nearly $11.92 million.  The city’s total of $11.9 million ranked fourth highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($24.36M), Downers Grove ($13.84M) and Lombard ($12.33M).  Also topping the $10 million mark were Oak Brook ($10.83M) and Aurora ($10.48M).

DuPage County earned nearly $1.27 million from Elmhurst from a combination of the one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($512,416.70), motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($243,208.20) and water commission sales tax of one-quarter percent ($512,447.26).

As a home rule community, Elmhurst received nearly $3.1 million from a combination of the municipal sales tax ($2.62M), state sales tax (1% of $11.9M or $119,023.25) and municipal home rule sales tax ($356,038.92).

Elmhurst’s Second Quarter 2003 figure was $3.27 million above the total of $14.73 million generated by 924 businesses during the post-holiday First Quarter of 2003 (January 1 through March 31).
