WALKERS TAKE STRIDES AGAINST RARE DISEASE

Despite grim skies, the “Strides Against MG” charity walk was a great success on June 2nd at Berens Park in Elmhurst, Illinois.  The event drew over 170 walkers and volunteers to support those who struggle with myasthenia gravis, a disabling autoimmune disease.  The walk raised nearly $8,500 for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Illinois, which funds critical research and provides programs of patient education and support.

Many, like the Weber family of Westmont, were present with a loved one whose life has been changed by MG.  Their daughter, Heather, walked as far as she could and then opted for wheelchair participation.  Lois Hodgson of Elmhurst, whose friend has myasthenia gravis, noted, “I loved the signs about MG along the walk – very informative and interesting.  The music and all the freebies were spectacular!”

Local sponsors included Fleet Feet of Elmhurst, Walgreens, Sam’s Club (Northlake), Berkeley Finer Foods, Jevitz Chiropractic Clinic, . Jewel on Schiller, and Costco (Oak Brook)

The aim of the “Strides Against MG” walk was to address one of MGF of Illinois’ primary goals: to raise the public profile of this life-changing disease.

Myasthenia gravis causes fluctuating weakness and can affect muscles that control eye movements, eyelids, chewing, swallowing, breathing, coughing and facial expression, as well as the arms and legs.

MGF of Illinois has been providing patient support and education and funding research for over 40 years.  If you have questions about myasthenia gravis, call MGF of Illinois at 1-800-888-6208.
