Of its 44 paid firefighters and 12 contract paramedics, Elmhurst has a minimum of 11 firefighters and four paramedics on duty each day. The Elmhurst Fire Department provides Advanced Life Support services. The department’s ultra-modern equipment not only fights fires, but also is designed to respond to medical, hazardous materials, technical above and below grade rescues, and vehicle extrication. Each station has two engine companies and one 100-foot aerial truck company. Two rescue squads, boat and administrative vehicles are also in service.

Elmhurst is one of only 16 communities in Illinois with an I.S.O. Class II protection rating. The department emphasizes prevention through building inspections, construction reviews, public education programs in the schools, and the sale of smoke detectors and extinguishers at both fire stations as well as at Elmfest and other community events.

Elmhurst residents enjoy their community thanks to its low crime rate. Efforts of 70 full-time and 12 part-time sworn officers, K-9 “Ice,” 12 community service officers and civilian support staff are focused on problem solving with strong input from residents. Officers patrol around the clock in marked and unmarked cars, and on foot.

A special C.O.P.P. unit focuses on special crime problem programs such as fifth-grade D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), sixth-grade V.E.G.A. (Violence Education and Gang Awareness) and high school liaisons foster dialogue within the schools, and senior citizens voice their needs through S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Lawmen Together).

Crime prevention programs include Stranger-Danger, bicycle safety, Operation Lifesaver (railroad crossing safety), robbery and shoplifting prevention, resident and commercial security surveys, and fraudulent scams.

Parents are reminded that alcohol and curfew ordinances are strictly enforced. Curfew applies to those under 18 from Sunday through Thursday at 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 12 midnight.
