Elmhurst Art Museum’s award winning structure contains a dramatic glass entrance gallery overlooking Wilder Park, three museum galleries, an education center, outdoor sculpture garden, gift shop and a fourth gallery houses the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild. The modern museum space incorporates the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed McCormick House, one of three such residences designed by the internationally renowned architect.
The Elmhurst Art Museum features exhibitions of its permanent collection, traveling exhibitions, juried competitions, group and individual artist exhibitions.
Elmhurst Art Museum’s vision is to be a premiere cultural destination known for the quality of its visual arts, architecture and education programs. Dedicated to the educational and cultural enrichment of listeners and players alike, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra is the sparkling treasure of this community. Under the leadership of Music Director Stephen Alltop, 80-plus professional and community musicians regularly perform the great music of four centuries for the people of the western suburbs.
Dates for the 2007-08 Subscription Concert Series are: Saturday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 18, at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. All concerts are at Elmhurst College’s Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. A free pre-concert lecture is held 75 minutes before each concert.
The Symphony also performs annually at a free Outdoor Family Concert in the Elmhurst College Mall on Elmfest Sunday (June 15), a Pops Concert Dinner Dance in April and a free Youth Concert at York Community High School in March.
The Stanger Auditions Concerto Competition, to be held at Elmhurst College's Buik Recital Hall in February, allows outstanding high school students to compete for the opportunity to receive cash awards and perform at a Symphony concert, and each spring thousands of area children hear in-school performances by an orchestral ensemble. Founded in 1957 and housed in the Glos Mansion, the award-winning Elmhurst Historical Museum is operated by the City of Elmhurst for the purpose of acquiring, preserving and interpreting original materials related to the history of the city.
The museum fulfills its mission by: • Acquiring and caring for locally significant artifacts, records and documents, photographs, audio-visual materials and publications; • Maintaining a historically and architecturally significant building (home of Elmhurst’s first Village President); • Presenting historical concepts and museum collections to the public through exhibits, educational programs, tours and publications; • Supporting research related to local history and museum collections; and • Offering cultural and leisure opportunities related to community and heritage.
Museum services include permanent collections of historical artifacts (7,000) and photographic images (10,000), personal, business and city records, a library of books (500), and microfilm copies of newspapers, censuses and maps. On display are an award-winning permanent exhibit (“Visions of Home”) examining Elmhurst as a model of suburbanization, temporary exhibits developed from the museum collection and traveling exhibits on national tours.
Educational programs ranging from gallery tours to craft demonstrations, classroom visits to neighborhood waking tours, and holiday programs to lectures are offered for adults, families, schools and special audiences. (top)

The Elmhurst Choral Union, directed by James MacDonald, provides an opportunity for residents to sing major choral works, led by a renowned director, accompanied by professional musicians and soloists in an attractive setting.
A not-for-profit organization (501c3) founded in 1952, the Choral Union is a community and college choir that performs classical masterworks and great choral music of all eras. To hear samples of the ensemble, visit the website.
The ECU appears at civic events such as the We Art The World: Elmhurst Fine Arts Festival and Elmfest, hold food drives and offer a scholarship. (top)

The result of more than 70 years of collecting by Joseph F. Lizzadro Sr. and family, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art shares the eternal beauty of gemstones and promotes the study of earth science.
The museum houses one of the largest collections of Chinese Jade carvings in the country. Other exhibits include animal dioramas, mineral specimens, gemstones, and push button exhibits of geological phenomena.
The museum offers a unique Gift Shop and tours are available with reservations. Educational programs are held on select Saturdays.(top)
THEATRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Theatre Historical Society of America is a 1,100 member national non-profit organization founded in 1969 which is interested in the history of theatre buildings. Its national headquarters is located in restored second floor space in the York Theatre building.
The THS American Movie Palace Museum includes artifacts, renderings, photos, ads and other exhibits relating to the great motion picture palaces built in all parts of the U.S. The Avalon Video Theatre is a large-scale model of Chicago’s 1927 Avalon Theatre. A large screen TV on-stage allows for viewing of archive videos about theatres across the country.
Tours for small groups can be arranged, as can off-site slide shows.(top)
