For more than 50 years, the Elmhurst Historical Museum, operated by the City of Elmhurst, has acquired, preserved and interpreted materials related to the city’s history.

“Visions of Hope” is an award-winning permanent exhibit that examines Elmhurst as a model of suburbanization, while temporary exhibits developed from the museum’s collection and traveling exhibits on national tours are also displayed.

EHM boasts permanent collections of historical artifacts (15,500) and photographic images (10,000); personal, business and city records; a library of books (500); and microfilm copies of newspapers, censuses and maps.

The Elmhurst Historical Museum Foundation (founded in 1992) and the City of Elmhurst’s Historical Commission merged in 2007 to create the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation as the advocacy voice and support organization for EHM's exhibits, programs, services and events—including the recently-completed renovation of the one-room Churchville Schoolhouse (circa 1850s and on the National Register of Historic Places), and development of an interactive Heritage Center.

EHM has operated within the historic Glos Mansion, former home of Elmhurst’s first Village President, for all but a decade (Wilder Mansion, 1965-75) of its existence, and also occupies the former Bates & Bates building adjacent to the south.
