Named the “Best Suburban Art Museum in Chicago” by Chicago Magazine, the Elmhurst Art Museum is a premiere cultural destination known for the quality of its visual arts, architecture and educational programs.
EAM celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2010. In 1974, the Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation was established with the goal of building a community visual arts center, and the Foundation formed the EAM in 1980 using two granted rooms in the Elmhurst Community Center.
Relocated to Wilder Park in 1997, the modern award-winning museum space incorporates the former Robert R. McCormick house (built in 1952 and purchased in 1991), one of three residences designed by internationally renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Along with its permanent collection, EAM showcases traveling exhibitions, juried competitions, and group and individual exhibitions.
EAM also serves as home to the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (incorporated in 1946), one of the oldest and foremost guilds in Chicago’s Western Suburbs. The Guild is a membership organization that sponsors artist demonstrations and local exhibits, and maintains one of EAM’s four galleries.
